How to be self-employed on the internet: my...
This is part two of a two-part answer to a question. Read part one (and the question!) here.  Ways to make money on the internets:  First, I do have a gig. I get a regular paycheck with Offbeat Home and also earn commissions for advertorials for sponsors there.  Affiliate programs. YES. I absolutely use affiliate programs. Mainly, I use Amazon — it’s the easiest, gives me great...

How to be self-employed on the internet: a...
Hi Cat! I recently came upon Offbeat Home which then led me to Hipster Housewife. Cannot get enough, btw. Love them both so very much. ^_^ I see in your blog that you work from home, which is a goal I’ve been working towards for some time now. It is crazy overwhelming trying to get started, just for lack of good information I’m sure. I’m assuming part of your...

My main thought this week
In 2011, I learned to have even more thankfulness for the people I know. We have good friends who work hard, make cool things, want to run for office, and are SO SMART we are proud to know them.  We are kind to each other and that means so much, every year. This year proves it will always be important. Go, go 2012!

songs you wish you'd heard in 2011 →
makebrk: next week’s drink & draw playlist:  we’re less than a week away from the next drink & draw. bring your friends, because this one’s going to be a party. there’ll still be 2 hours of figure drawing (this month we have a male model), and this time we’ll have contests. with prizes. yep. can’t ruin the surprise, but it’ll be fun. My favorite song on this post is the last...

I can't even title this. It would just come out...
When I was a little kid, I really enjoyed history. I mean, I really enjoyed a lot of school, but history had a lot of reading and I liked reading and I loved learning about all the people who’d come before us.  When we first learned about the Bill of Rights I remember thinking the people who wrote it were so smart. Smarter than my feeble little kid brain could grasp. They’ve lived...

We love the internet
This month, Scott Rocketship and I made an installation for the first Thinc Iowa conference. It was the first piece we’ve made together.  We love the internet is a collection of QR codes — codes scannable by smart phones with a free barcode reader app installed.   We carefully curated evidence of how awesome the internet is. We collected everything from old-school 90s memes to...

Occupy the Caucus: Join us in Iowa this winter →
occupythecaucus: During the caucus season, the disconnect between politicians and their voters is at its smallest in Iowa, while the political process is in the national media limelight. We will utilize the notoriety afforded to Iowa in this pivotal moment. This attention, coupled with growing support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, gives us the opportunity to propagate sweeping economic...

How to Use Twitter
People ask me about Twitter a LOT. I think I am many acquaintances’ closest approximation of a nerdy friend — they probably just don’t talk about tech with their friends as much as I do.  Anyway, so this is the article I want to start giving them. Marshall Kirkpatrick is the editor of ReadWriteWeb and is so very good at digging information out of the Internet. He is my...

From the guestbook of my blog, June 9, 2001: You sound like a bitch. I’m sure the “people” you write  about are none too happy with your little site…esp. the  ones where you publish PRIVATE E-MAILS you send to  them….god, you even said in one that the girl is going to  print it out and show it to all her friends……what  you’re doing is even worse....

The secret to the last of my blocks is: hoarding
Creative block. Writer’s block. Blocks get a lot of attention, but they all have the same root: fear. The fear of starting is a block. The fear of completing something is a block. Waiting for the perfect idea is a block. Blocks are anxieties people have during the process of drawing or writing or building, and the anxiety is the main thing people battle in our creative process.  After I got...

The new art vending machine in Ames
Did you know ArtVend set up in Wheatsfield Coop grocery in Ames last week?  You can go up there now and use a vending machine to buy art. Here’s what Kristin Roach, the girl who coordinates ArtVend, wants you do know:  This project is really great for a few key reasons that we love to point out to anyone who will listen: It’s 100% local – everything was made within 50 miles of Ames ...

I have to wonder about his process. How much of these sculptures is the result of a happy accident? Does he draw sketches first or just go? Some of these lines are so real.

I'm asking for a favor, Tumblr →
bestrooftalkever: inothernews: psydoctor8: In repsonse to aatombomb’s and approachingsignificance’s post about Troy Davis, I propose we DO SOMETHING about it that takes 30 seconds. Questions I get asked a lot: Did your husband take...
I often work with my husband, and he usually works with me as Scott Rocketship. But he’s better than I was as maintaining two names, so he’s also Scott Kubie.  His name is legally Scott Kubie, and probably always will be. This is not a source of conflict between us — we good wit it.

Affirmative action and girls in tech and science
This week I had a discussion on Google+ about awards which focus on women. You know: Top Ten Ladies in Business or 40 Females Makin’ Shit Happen. I’d been thinking about it because of a local technology association’s announcement of their Women of Innovation nominations for 2011. I’m bothered by awards like this because they feel a little “separate but equal.”...

George Orwell's WHY I WRITE
George Orwell Why I Write From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that I was outraging my true nature and that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books. I was the middle child of three, but there...

I hired an assistant.
WHO AM I?!  So really, I’ve needed an assistant for ages. I love to work. I love work! All the projects I have my fingers in are fulfilling and exciting and make me feel good. I often wonder if I’m not an addict except with work instead of shopping or beer or dope.  And overall, I’ve been pretty good at limiting my commitments. Besides that, I haven’t been good at...
